DISGUSTING IMAGES - NO ACTION Log onto the HSE Link to find out what they think about the hazards from sewerage HALL members have taken the photographs below showing the absolutely disgusting recent overflow from the Gryffe Sewer. These are really disturbing photographs of the disgusting detritus which overflows from the Gryffe Valley Sewer. This graphically shows contamination which pollutes the River Gryffe and its tributaries (The River Gryffe is a migratory salmon river and worthy of special protection). It graphically shows the potential to cause harm to the public. There is no excuse for our politicians not taking direct action and that this is not a party issue.
Legal convention has it that the source of contamination is liable for the pollution it causes. You will no doubt have heard of the "polluter pays principle". Common sense tells us that Scottish Water is not going to come up with a solution overnight.
Common sense, common decency, common concern for the environment and common regard for public health should tell you that it is totally unacceptable to add, even in a small way, to the problem by building more houses which will add their effluent to the problem. After all, if this was oil leaking from a broken pipe would you stand by and encourage the polluter to top up the oil supply before the pipe was repaired - of course not!
Open sewers to: Rats, Dogs, Cats, Scavenging Birds and CHILDREN Nine GP's say its a Health Hazard - they can't be wrong! See images below - is this acceptable for the 21st Century? Lobby your politicians We should demand that our representatives take action by:
1. Lobbying Scottish Water; 2. Demanding action from SEPA; 3. Supporting the Gryffe Action Group; 4. Helping Houston Amenity Land; 5. Stopping Renfrewshire Council from approving new houses; 6. Calling for a Public Inquiry; 7. Protecting our Environment; 8. Being a good example. They deserve to be prosecuted Ask SEPA to prosecute Scottish Water. SEPA can bring prosecutions against Scottish Water if they cause pollution to water courses or create a hazard or injury to people. Go to "Contacts" and ask SEPA to prosecute Scottish Water. Ask The HSE to prosecute Scottish Water. You may remember that the Metroploitan Police were convicted under Health & Safety Law in the Jean Charles de Menezes shooting case. The same legislation could possibly apply here to both Scottish Water and Renfrewshire Council. Moreover they could also be subject to prosecution under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations if any of the "sleeving" work done by Scottish Water since 1994 has caused a risk to the health and safety of the public and by them not considering risks which may arise during maintenance of the public open space, or carrying out maintenance properly. Go to "Contacts" and ask the HSE to prosecute both Scottish Water as owners, designers and operators of the sewers. They should also question whether Renfrewshire Council are maintaining public open space properly. Photographs showing the disgusting overflow 31st January 2008
